Mark Burns serves as a liaison to numerous veterans organizations in Onondaga County. In
addition to being named Grand Marshal this year, he is the Onondaga County Veterans' Veteran
of the Year.
Burns joined the Army in December 1976 as a Morse Code Radio Operator. He served as an
instructor at the US Army Signal School at Fort Gordon GA, a Radio Team Chief in Germany ,
and a Platoon Sergeant at the 46th Combat Support Hospital, Ft Devens, MA. He was selected
for recruiting duty in 1983 and served as a recruiter, recruiting station commander, and Army
Guidance Counselor. His final assignment was as the First Sergeant of the Rochester Army
recruiting Company.
Upon his Army retirement in December of 1997 he was hired as a management trainer by Monro Muffler, teaching Courses at their Henrietta NY Training center until assuming duties as a regional manager supervising 13 auto repair shops in Central NY. He left Monro to return to Syracuse Army Recruiting Battalion as a contractor in support of recruiting during the surge of OEF and OIF. He assumed his current role of Chief of Advertising and Public Affairs in April of 2012, responsible for publicizing the Army Story over the Battalion’s 38,000 mile footprint in Upstate NY and NE Pennsylvania.
He has volunteered for several Veteran Organizations in CNY, serving as Camillus American Legion Post 1540 Commander, currently serves as Vice Commander of Seneca Falls Post 366. He also currently serves on the Onondaga County Executive’s Veteran Advisory Council, the War Memorial Renovation Subcommittee, Clear Path for Veterans Veteran Advisory Council, and a volunteer for CNY Honor Flight. Mark was a member of the CNY Veterans Day Parade Committee, serving as Committee President for the last 5 years. Mark currently resides in Camillus with his wife of 43 years, Catherine.
