With cheers and salutes, thousands said 'thank you' to local veterans at the CNY Veterans Parade held Nov. 8, 2008 in Downtown Syracuse. Salina Street was filled with marching band music and military vehicles. More than 44 local veterans organizations marched in the parade. Representatives from local American Legions, VFW Posts, VA Medical Center, Eagle Association, and Army ROTC programs participated.

Girl and Boy Scout troops handed out flags and programs. The crowds cheered as marching bands from Baldwinsville, North Syracuse, East Syracuse - Minoa, Henninger, Jordan- Elbridge, Liverpool, and West Genesee came down the street. The Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band and the Syracuse Brigadiers also performed.

Soldiers from all branches of the armed forces, both active and reserve, drew much applause and many salutes as they advanced along the parade route.

A helicopter from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office flew over Salina Street for several minutes during the parade. The Syracuse University Marching Band ended the parade with more than 200 members playing patriotic tunes. The 2009 CNY Veterans Parade is tentatively set for Saturday, Nov. 7 with step off at noon in Clinton Square. The parade committee is looking for active and reserve military units, veterans organizations, and high school bands to include in the parade.
